With increasing demand, adulteration in jaggery is a growing concern. How can you ensure you’re buying pure jaggery?
- Color: Pure jaggery is usually dark brown. Avoid bright yellow or very light brown jaggery, which might indicate chemical treatment or artificial colors.
- Texture: It should be firm but slightly soft and easy to break. If it’s too hard or has a very crystalized texture, it could be adulterated.
- Taste: It should have a natural, sweet taste with a hint of molasses. A very salty or bitter aftertaste is a red flag.
- Dissolving Test: When dissolved in water, pure jaggery will leave minimal residue. Adulterated jaggery might leave more impurities at the bottom.
